Over the past ten years Bluefin tuna have visited the Southern Outer Banks in extremely large numbers. These giant bluefin range in weight from 100 lbs. to over 700 lbs. These giants arrive in November off the coast of Morehead City and stay through the winter until their departure in March. Although giant bluefin are considered by many to be an offshore fish most are caught within 20 miles of the beach and in water as shallow as 10 feet although the average is 60 to 70 feet deep. The normal method for catching these giants is by trolling lures behind the boat. This method has been extremely productive and it is possible to catch multiple fish on any given trip. Sea Tales uses 80 lb. trolling gear with a fighting chair to allow a quick capture and release. Although current federal regulations allow anglers to keep one fish per boat per day if they are between 43 inches and 73 inches most fish are well over the 73 inches long. Therefore the vast majority of this fishery is catch and release although the potential is there for a cooler full of tuna. All tunas caught and released are tagged to allow tracking and research for this spectacular fishery. As this fishery is in the winter it can be extremely cold fishing. Sea Tales is fully heated in the spacious salon and in the forward cabin areas allowing anglers the ability to stay warm during the early morning trip to the fishing grounds. If you are ready to try this exciting fishery, give us a call. We allow a maximum of 6 passengers on all trips; so get a few of your friends and come on down and catch a tuna. Rates are $1,000 a day and do not include food of any type. You are encouraged to wear warm clothes and bring enough food for yourself.
